Bariatric Surgery

The fellow’s training experience, primarily spent in general, upper GI and bariatric surgery procedures such as paraesophageal hernia repair and fundoplication, revisional foregut surgery, Heller myotomy, primary bariatric (gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, duodenal switch) and revisional procedures, inguinal hernia, complex ventral hernia, solid organ surgery, and diagnostic and therapeutic flexible endoscopy.

Foregut fellowship is a one-year fellowship designed to provide advanced Foregut surgery and endoscopic training to physicians who are trained in General Surgery and have an interest in diseases of the esophagus and stomach. The fellowship program emphasizes advanced endoscopic, laparoscopic, and minimally invasive surgical techniques in the management of patients with foregut disease. The Esophageal Institute’s clinical philosophy is to provide individualized care to these patients utilizing a multi-disciplinary team approach.

Funded by a T32 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, our program is led by principal investigator/program director Todd K. Rosengart, MD, chair of the Department of Surgery, and program co-directors, Scott A. LeMaire, MD, vice chair for research, and Barbara W. Trautner, MD, PhD, director of clinical research. The program provides salary and educational support to two (MD or PhD) trainees per year, for two years each. Postdoctoral MD and PhD trainees accepted into the program will engage in a mentored research project which will be complemented by a set of core program activities, team science training, and responsible conduct of research training.
